NASCAR BGN: Washington/Erving Honored At Press Conference

Baltimore, Md. - Key players in the Washington / Erving - Dr. Pepper NASCAR Busch Grand National race team attended a major press conference on Tuesday at the BWI Airport Marriott. Attendees included the Washington / Erving Motorsports Team: Joe Washington, NFL star formerly with the Baltimore Colts and the Washington Redskins; Julius "Dr. J." Erving, NBA legend formerly of the Philadelphia 76ers; Asa Murray, a Philadelphia executive and North Carolina executive Fields Jackson.Joining in the recognition of the historic achievement as the FIRST wholly minority owned team to compete and complete a full season in 25 years of NASCAR racing were: representatives of the Dr. Pepper Corporation, Senior VP Cindi Clark, the Boy Scouts of America executives Carey Keane and Phil Bevins, and local/national politicians, executives and officials.
In May of this year, Washington / Erving Motorsports and Dr. Pepper formed a partnership of historic proportion by establishing the first fully sponsored African-American team in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.
The maroon colored #50 Dr. Pepper Ford Taurus debuted in February in Daytona during Speedweeks and finished the season in 38th out of 112 owner entries throughout the season.
Joe Washington, President of Washington / Erving Motorsports said, "This history making project is one of the most exciting events of my career we look forward to great success and many winning seasons," he continued. Team leaders discussed aggressive plans for the 1999 season as well as an enthusiastic promotional and community-involved program with the Boy Scouts of America and Dr. Pepper.
